After several years of trying
to get to this course for various tournaments we finally landed some time to
play the 2024 Tennessee Open and we can see why people have always talked well
about this facility. It is a challenging adventure style course with a good
variety of hole designs to make you think throughout your round. The course
uses the up and down nature of the valley well though one drawback is that
there isn’t much shade out there in the summer sun. However, there is a little
pavilion at the “turn” that provides some shade and some drink vending machines
for those hot days. A few of the holes do have some ace chances though on your
first playthrough the lines might not be as noticeable as they are once you
have gotten acclimated to the course. Most of the holes have challenging second
putts so par is something that will be a good accomplishment for more
inexperienced players. Even the best
pros struggle with keeping rounds consistently around the “pro” par (36). An additional feature on this course is that
several of the holes have multiple pin placements so they can be changed up for
new experiences. This is something more
unique in tournaments as well and will keep you thinking on some where it is a
very different approach to the hole.
Hole 8 has a particularly unique design with multiple pathways around
some water and a variety of cup placements which allow for a lot of different
paths.
We also can’t say enough
about Kyle and the staff at Mossy Creek.
They do a great job at thinking about the design of the course and
maintaining it for play. They have also
set up a lot of things to nurture the spirit of minigolf with memberships,
local tournaments and of course inviting the national pros to some big
tournaments during the year. Their observation deck is a great place to hang
for a bit and have some ice cream or a drink and just take in a wonderful view
of a minigolf course. The only reason we
didn’t put it in our absolute top group of courses is that it is more a “plain”
adventure golf course with little theming.
So it might not be as exciting for people looking for a more immersive
experience. However, with it not being too far off I-40 and an easy drive from
some of the more popular tourist centers like Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, it
is worth a little detour to play an excellent tournament style adventure golf
course and see how you stack up against the national pros who play there each
year.
