This course is home to one of the several USPMGA tournaments throughout the year and it is very deserving of a major tournament. The course has a good combination of holes with obstacles and “championship” style holes (those that rely on slopes, etc.). Almost every hole on the course provides you with an opportunity for an ace (as long as you figure out some of the tricks) and even the most novice of players should come in at or under par. Good players will easily shoot around 40 on this course. The obstacles and several of the hole designs are all regionally inspired. There are obstacles such as fishing buoys and a rotating ship’s wheel. Several of the holes are also designed like objects (see the pictures). There is an anchor hole, as well as a whale hole and a dolphin hole (the later two having blue carpeting which tends to run a bit faster than the green carpets- judge your speed carefully on those holes).
The landscaping is excellent and its position down a hill and under some trees offers a good blend of sun and shade as you play. The carpets are all in excellent condition and the bricks around the holes are traditional bricks with flat edges and very few seams for consistent bounces. This course also offers a free game hole on the 19th hole. In all it is an excellent course and well worth the visit if you are in the area.
2012 Update
Dolphin Mini Golf continues to be one of The Putting Penguin’s favorites. (That’s why it’s one of the ten courses featured in “10 Courses for 10 Years.”) The entire Putting Penguin team played the 19th Annual Maine State Dolphin Open in September 2012. This course is a classic home-made course. The coastal theme of the course is perfect in the historic seaside town of Boothbay Harbor. There is a lighthouse, a ship’s wheel, and on what may be the toughest hole, buoys. One hole is shaped as a dolphin, and another is shaped as a whale. There’s also a 19th hole where you can play for a free game. The course is always clean and well maintained. There’s plenty of shade for those hot summer days. It’s well laid out with plenty of room between holes in case there’s a crowd. The Putting Penguin highly recommends this course. It’s conveniently located just outside the Boothbay Harbor downtown, and it’s a great addition to a family vacation itinerary. After a round be sure to check out the Shell Museum and grab a snack.
