We want to be clear up front – we are reviewing a course that was designed, in part, by members of The Putting Penguin.  So we are reviewing our own work.  However, we are providing a variety of visitors reviews as objective views on this course and we are going to try to be as objective as possible on the review.

This course was set up for the first time to support St. Baldrick’s children’s cancer research, which is one of the charities of choice for the Cambridge House Brew Pub.  It was a 9-hole course that was set up in various sections of the pub.  A portion of the entrance fee went to the charity and the other portion also got you a pint of beer.  The holes were designed using both the natural walls of the pub along with bricks and some climbing rope to mark the greens.  In addition, there were a few special holes including one using a ramp with three holes (designed by Drunken Penguin Sports), putting down a flight of stairs and putting through some dryer vent into the brewing room.  The high points of the course was that it was fun putting around a pub and naturally it was run by a group of minigolf enthusiasts.  In addition, we had someone dressed like a Penguin, which brings a smile to everyone’s day.

One of the drawbacks of the course was the climbing rope used on some of the holes.  It was good for marking the holes but didn’t do much to keep the ball in play.  However, areas where the balls usually went were lined with brick and there was no penalty for going out of bounds, so it didn’t effect play that much.  In addition, the cups that were used didn’t exactly keep the ball in them all the time so it was sometimes tough to judge what was in and what wasn’t.  The ramp on hole #5 (which was cool being homemade) was also a little difficult, but there was a way to putt around it.  Finally, hole #9, while being a signature hole, was tough to putt into the dryer vent but that made it interesting come playoff time.

Overall it was an extremely fun course and everyone really seemed to enjoy playing it as well as the atmosphere of the pub.  We would like to thank Steve and the whole Cambridge House Brew Pub for providing us with the opportunity to do this event and for putting so much support behind it.
